Finding Your Marketing Zen: The Alignment Reboot

For my birthday, I received a new yoga mat. Unlike my old plain blue mat, this one is cork with subtle guide marks designed to help with hand and foot alignment. I didn’t think much of it initially, but during my first yoga session with the new mat, the guide marks revealed something surprising: my alignment was off.


My right shoulder peaked a centimeter higher than my left. My big toe was slightly off-center. Angles that I thought were 45 and 90 degrees turned out to be closer to 40 and 110. Individually, these adjustments seemed minor. Yet, by the end of the session, instead of feeling refreshed and energized, I felt tight and sore. The small misalignments were taking a toll, impacting my overall experience and effectiveness.


That’s when it hit me: alignment matters. A small misalignment can have a big impact — not just in yoga but in business as well.


The Business Parallel

Just as proper alignment in yoga enhances balance, flow, and energy, alignment in your marketing strategy ensures your business thrives. Without the right guideposts, your marketing efforts can subtly drift off course. And just like my yoga mat revealed my misalignments, having the right tools and perspective can shine a light on where your business needs adjustment.


Here are some examples of common misalignments in marketing and how to address them:


  1. Target Audience vs. Messaging

    • Misalignment: Your messaging doesn’t resonate with your audience because it’s too broad or too focused on features rather than benefits.

    • Adjustment: Revisit your ideal customer profile. Use insights from client feedback to refine your message and make it more relevant and engaging.

  2. Goals vs. Tactics

    • Misalignment: You’re running campaigns without clear goals or using tactics that don’t align with your business objectives.

    • Adjustment: Set SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) goals for each campaign. Then ensure every tactic serves those goals.

  3. Content vs. Distribution

    • Misalignment: You’re creating great content, but it’s not reaching the right audience because you’re using the wrong channels.

    • Adjustment: Analyze where your audience spends their time and prioritize those channels. For example, LinkedIn might be better for B2B content than Facebook.

  4. Metrics vs. Outcomes

    • Misalignment: You’re tracking metrics that don’t provide meaningful insight into your success (e.g., clicks instead of conversions).

    • Adjustment: Focus on metrics that align with your ultimate business outcomes, like lead quality, customer acquisition cost, or lifetime value.


Realigning for Success

The beauty of alignment is that even small adjustments can yield significant results. Here’s how you can find your marketing zen:


  1. Audit Your Current Strategy: Just as I used the guideposts on my mat to assess my poses, use tools like customer surveys, analytics, and competitive research to assess where your marketing stands.

  2. Set Clear Guideposts: Define your objectives, audience, and key performance indicators. These will serve as your alignment marks, helping you stay focused and balanced.

  3. Test and Adjust: Try new approaches, measure the results, and refine as needed. Marketing is dynamic, and staying in alignment requires flexibility and constant reassessment.

  4. Invest in Tools and Expertise: Sometimes, you need a new mat with guide marks or an expert’s advice to reveal areas of misalignment. Don’t hesitate to seek help or upgrade your resources.


Alignment isn’t about perfection; it’s about finding balance and creating flow. Small adjustments — whether in your yoga practice or your marketing strategy — can transform your outcomes. By recognizing misalignments and making intentional changes, you’ll not only avoid unnecessary pain but also unlock your full potential.


So, take a moment to pause, reflect, and realign. Your business (and maybe even your yoga practice) will thank you.
